Chapter VIII: The Storm Returns

“If you would just talk about it you might be able to….”

“Have I not told you to be silent enough times?” I asked. My voice was harsh. My body shook as memories flashed by in my mind. Memories I had done my best to repress and force into the back of my mind while I was preparing for my final tests….now they were all brought back to the forefront. The demoness was lucky that the everpresent light was softly emanating off of me, seeking to calm me and discourage rash action.

“You have. But I am your familiar,” she said.

I turned to face her. We were sitting on the floor of the wealthy apartment Liovorn had set us up with. I was not used to the luxuries provided by such a place: massages, cleaning staff, a soft bed….I preferred the floor. Emilia was floating above me, stretching out her wings. “I thought that was still up for debate.”

She shook her head. “You are as you advertised yourself. Kind. Sympathetic to my needs. And, most importantly, adorable when you’re angry.”

My left eye twitched. She reminded me further of Cedric, of the man who was gone for good. Who I could have saved with the power I now possessed. I began thinking that the light was to blame, that it should have activated the moment I was about to be killed….instead it had waited for me to seek to help another….

I closed my eyes and attempted to calm myself by focusing on my breathing. The light pressed in on my mind, gently adding pressure to my thoughts as though a heavy woolen blanket were laid upon my head. Then a real weight was added to the top of my head.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Seems like a nice place to sit,” she replied. “If you don’t want to talk about it now, that’s fine. But you should talk to someone about it eventually.”

“And what would a demon know about human psychology?”

“A great deal, as it turns out,” she giggled. “I dominated mortal minds for years before you caught me. It was fun, but honestly I get more magic from you than I ever did hunting by myself.”

“Wasn’t that large demon you were with your friend?”

“Oh, Gartus?” she nearly cackled. “No, I owed him a favor and refused to pay up. You didn’t fall for an act my dear Flavius, he truly was trying to hurt me when I was summoned to you. I was just unaware of what becoming a familiar would entail at the time so I sought to beat you anyway.” She flitted down in front of my face. She tapped my nose. “The warlocks are feared by our kind. Your world is a little enigma thanks to that protective barrier around it. I assumed you were all monsters who only stole.”

“Glad I have not been added to that generalization,” I snorted.

We sat in silence for a few moments as I focused my mind by slowly pushing my magic throughout my various limbs.
